Online class and it’s Difficulties

Hello everyone, I hope you all are doing well and are safe out there. It’s been such a long time since I wrote any sort of blog or anything else for the website. Many things have changed since the last time I wrote the blog and I am very glad to be back here sharing my ideas, opinions, and my blogs with you all. During this time Got sick, Lost some family members, and also finally completed mine under graduation degree. Will keep sharing my life events in upcoming blogs too. But, I missed writing and communicating with you all. Hope to get connected with you all again ❤

Ma’am, I don’t like staying at home and reading through the online class! Neither do I get to talk to my friends, nor can I have some fun with them. It’s such a bore, so I don’t prefer an online class at all. One of my students shared what he felt. “No, I find online class much more fun and effective than physical class. Neither do I have to wake up early, nor I have to carry heavy bags to school. It’s so much more fun than physical school. One day my students of grade 5 were having their debate on whether online classes are fun or not.

I enjoy being around kids, so I always feel so distant and sad not being around them physically. But as my other student said, this has lessened up the traveling period and saved a lot of time and energy.

Covid-19 that started around the end of 2019 A.D. is still brutally affecting all parts of our country. In 2077 B.S., we had no other choice than to adapt to new technology and run our school online. Later after 3/4 months, we were able to run school physically yet again from the beginning of this year, we had to go back online and, now all teachers and students are inside the screen of the computer and mobile phones.

I recently finished my undergraduate degree. And due to my immense love for teaching, I started teaching children again. I taught before too, so I know the problems and advantages of physical classes and online classes. I don’t know if it’s due to a lack of understanding among parents or because they think one cannot learn anything from online teaching so, parents have not admitted their children for currently running online classes. Out of 30 students that attend physical classes, only around half of them attend the online class. And among all those who attend the class, they spend their entire time complaining that they can’t hear me or they can’t see what I am sharing. Whenever I get free time, I keep wondering that, I live in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, but still more than half of people who live in Kathmandu have no proper internet connection in their house. Where the rest of the world is operating its entire government through the internet, our country doesn’t even have a proper usable Internet facility throughout the capital city, let alone the entire country. So, even though we are running online classes in Nepal, the standard and quality is still questionable to date. There was a huge gap among the boarding and government schools of Nepal in comparison to the education provided, but now due to this compulsion of online classes, this gap seems to increase, creating an uncoverable gap for the future.

When I was teaching maths in grade 4 sometime back, we were discussing the solid shapes and I explained about pyramids and how we can find real pyramids in Egypt, and how there are mummies inside them. One of my students then asked me whether we can find Daddy too inside the pyramid just the way we find mummy there. We all laughed at that statement for a while and I opened youtube and shared a video with them about Egypt and pyramids which made them aware of the real scenario of pyramid and mummy. One of the biggest benefits of an online class is that we have an immense source of information and knowledge that we can pass on to the students through the use of the internet. Where we weren’t able to express much in physical classes before, now within a single click, we can find so much shareable information for the students.

But where there is a benefit of being able to explain things in a much better way, there is one disadvantage too. It’s that not all the topics are explainable through the online classes. Some lessons are much better explained physically than in online classes.

Likewise, Senior grade students are much more comfortable in using technology due to which they can operate their devices themselves. But juniors have not yet fully adapted to this technology, so they need their parent’s assistance every moment. So, For all those teachers that teach the junior classes, they have that extra pressure of making parents satisfied with their teaching skills. Due to this pressure, teachers are forced to work ten times harder than they did during the physical classes.

In the current situation, we have zero clues as to when this corona will end and when we will be able to breathe mask-free air. Just the way we take paracetamol for every minor body ache or headache, our government has no other possible solutions other than lockdown for controlling corona. Due to which, Even though parents want their child to learn through online classes, due to unemployment and no income, they are forced to choose their hunger and food over costly internet system.

Government has no other options looked up at rather than sticking to lockdown and there is a so trustable online education system too. Last year we were all of a sudden attack by the coronavirus, so we were unprepared and weren’t able to tackle it any other way. But during the entire year, the government didn’t come up with any ideas that could make living better amidst this chaos, rather was stuck in its dirty political games.
Maybe it was our stupidity to expect so much from such a shameless government.

The level of destruction that corona has made in the education system of Nepal is much lesser than the destruction made by government’s shameless attitude and it’s ruthless behavior towards it citizen. And this attitude is sure to make a big scar in the future of our country’s education system for quite a long time ahead.
